P1.21 Goes Cloud Detection at the Global Hydrology and Climate Center

چکیده

NOAA’s geostationary satellites play a key role in observing the spatial and temporal variations in surface and atmospheric features over much of North America and surrounding ocean regions. The nearly continuous viewing of the GOES-East and West satellites allows for the rapid temporal sampling of changes in land surface temperature, atmospheric stability, and clouds which are important for monitoring shortterm weather. While limited in spatial resolution compared to low-earth orbiting satellites, the GOES Imager and Sounder data and products are heavily used by NOAA, DOD, NASA, and other agencies and private companies to support their operational requirements.

Spatially Varying Spectral Thresholds for Modis Cloud Detection

For many parameters derived from satellite imagery, the accurate detection of clouds is essential. The determination of cloud or no cloud for each pixel is known as a cloud mask. Cloud masks are used to filter out cloudy pixels for clear-sky retrievals such as land and sea surface temperature and total precipitable water, and also to detect clouds for cloud parameter retrievals such as cloud ph...

Distributed Algorithm for Two{Dimensional Global Climate Modeling

The importance of global climate modeling for long{ term studies of global warming and ozone depletion is the focus of the recent DOE CHAMMP program 7]. We have developed a model and distributed algorithm for 2{D climate modeling which includes ocean intermediate/deep layer dynamics, coupled at-mosphere/biosphere hydrology and velocity interactions , and variable lapse rates. This algorithm all...

Various components of the land surface, their individual hydrological processes and the process-oriented models are reviewed in this paper, with the focus on their application in global climate models (GCMs). The Biosphere–Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (BATS) is examined regarding its performance for three different surfaces (crop, forest and grass), with available data from HAPEX-MOBILHY, ABRACOS...

Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change

The increasing rate of the global surface temperature will have a significant impact on local hydrological regimes and water resources, which leads to the assessment of the climate change impacts. Main parameters that are closely related to the climate change are temperature and precipitation. Therefore, there is a growing need for an integrated analysis that can quantify the impacts of climate...

Assessing Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change: Modeling Techniques and Challenges

Climate Change refers to any systematic change in the long-term statistics of climate elements (such as temperature, pressure, or winds) sustained over several decades or longer time periods. General Circulation Models (GCMs) are tools designed to simulate time series of climate variables globally, accounting for effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and resulting global climate change....
